Medieval book of “Hours” as a 3D holographic projection

21-10-2009

Nijmegen, The Netherlands – Museum Het Valkhof, situated in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, opens its doors for a unique exhibition about the world of medieval Duchess Catherine of Cleves. This exhibition about the past is supported in a futuristic way by the latest holographic xyZ 3D Display technology of Zero Creative.

The "Hours" of Catherine of Cleves, Duchess of Guelders (1417-1476), is the most reknown prayer book with miniatures from the Northern Netherlands from the 15th century. Since the book is temporarily taken apart for research, the European public can view as much as 100 separate sheets from this masterpiece.

Now, almost 570 years later, the book has partly been brought to life. Some pages are converted into full 3D, using the latest technology. This new way of presenting makes it possible to observe some unique details of the Hours. Along with an animation of Catherine of Cleves in person, the viewer will be introduced personally in Catherine’s world. This results in an impressive experience.

Using so called xyZ 3D Displays the presentation is viewable in amazing real 3D, without the requirements of special 3D-glasses. This holographic projection is realized by a special optical lens technology combined with custom developed 3D images. Museum Het Valkhof treats here visitors to no less than two of these 3D holographic projections.

"The visualizations that Zero Creative made for us, are bringing the remarkable world of this particular book almost literally closer to our visitors. In a surprising way, people are encouraged to look outside the box and introduced to important content information in an enjoyable way, while they visit the exhibition," said art historian Ruud Priem, curator of ancient art from the museum.

The exhibition is running until January 3, 2010. The Museum is located at Kelfkensbos 59 in Nijmegen, the oldest city of The Netherlands.

Zero Creative is specialized in exclusive 3D experience and has already worked for several museums. The Nijmegen based company is world renowned for its unique autostereoscopic xyZ 3D displays based on lenticular technology. These LCD screens provide a very bright and clear 3D effect, without the need for special 3D glasses. In these products the company has a leading position in the world.
